Organic chemistry is the most demanded area of modern science for improving the quality of human life, maintaining health, creating new generations of drugs, including for the prevention and treatment of socially significant diseases. Most of the currently existing industrial processes are associated with the production and processing of organic substances. It is organic molecules that constitute and will form the most important basis for both the fuel and energy complex (processing of hydrocarbons) and the immediate priorities for the development of the chemical industry.
At the same time, the fate of organic chemistry in recent decades has been very dramatic. In the understanding of researchers and specialists, the application of organic substances and methodological development of ways to obtain them have practically replaced fundamental organic chemistry. This area of chemical science has almost disappeared from development programs and roadmaps, and only a small number of research funds and grant programs support basic research in the field of organic chemistry. Bright and rapidly developing areas of application of organic substances and large-scale scientific programs (pharma, bio, nano, energy, materials) have largely pushed the fundamental science of the synthesis of organic molecules into the background - the real basis of scientific research and innovation.
The journal "Uspekhi khimii" (No. 10, 2014) presents a unique review prepared by highly qualified Russian specialists working in key areas of the development of modern chemistry. The conducted examination reveals an interesting tendency in the development of organic chemistry - the implementation of reactions with "atomic precision" - the cutting edge of the synthesis and transformation of organic molecules. In our opinion, mo Modern organic synthesis. dern Russian science is in dire need of articles that give a new impetus to the formation of scientific programs and, in the future, to the development of fundamental science.
The successful work of a large team of authors representing 13 research institutes and universities is described in 14 sections of the review. Of course, it is not possible to carry out a detailed analysis of all directions in the development of organic chemistry. However, this review, which has no analogues in the domestic literature, maintains an optimal balance in the presentation of the material. I am sure that the review will be very useful for a wide audience of readers.
